(Send in your questions and I will see how to fill it ;-))

Known bugs:

  • Digital Video Broadcasting (cable, eyetv, …) : Aspect "4:3->16:9" sometimes could produce a failure with your mpeg.
A "raw" DVB contains informations about all the broadcasted programms during your stream capture. FFmpeg read all these brodcasted data, and lose its way :-(
Version 1.xx will introduce (some day) a MPEG corrector, and FFmpeg will always easily process your DVB.

  • Offset: If audio track of MPEG does not begin with the video track, you could have an audio-video out-of-synch.
MC still handles it if your source file is QuickTime compatible, does not yet handle it with MPEG/VOB/MPEG-TS/… C'est déjà géré si le fichier source est compatible QuickTime, but only handles it in some modules for MPEG/VOB/MPEG-TS/…
    Maybe for version 1.6 too…

  • Tiger, MacOSX 10.4 : possible bug with "some processes in Studio Modules", and in "Encoding SD module with output DV and DOS disk drives":
Sometimes (not always ;-)) you could encounter this alert:
    bugs_tiger

    Explanation:
This is a Tiger bug: Tiger unix system is "silent", in fact he does not know in what language he can speak…
Apple only corrected this "bug" in Leopard. So, MovieConverter Studio needs to patch it in its app.
But sometimes the patch is not sufficient, and you will see this alert :-(

    Solutions:
    2 options:
    - Launch it again (this is a random error, you perhaps could succeed).
    - Remove all non-ascii characters inside your file path, and not only inside the name file (eg: "/Volumes/Vidéos from my camcorder/00015.MTS", just remove the é from Vidéos).
Sorry, I have no better solution for you (and Apple has abandoned Tiger fixes since the release of MacOS 10.5).

…If you see this alert on non-Tiger system (!?!), please inform me ;)

FAQ:

  • Q: DV encoding is ugly!
  • A: seeing it with QuickTime Player?
QuickTime integrates a lot of automatisms to display DV files, use VLC to consult it (VLC does not modify -without to prevent you- the way it displays video files).
…and you will see that your DV encoding has an excellent quality :-)

  • Q: My video has no sound anymore after MCS encoding "for DVD", however I have APPLE MPEG2 codec which enables me to read this sort of video files!
  • A: No concern, it is normal :-)
Your audio was encoded to AC3: the most compatible audio format with DVD hardwares.
But QuickTime cannot read AC3 audio in a multiplexed file (nor Perian codec).
  • Q: What to do?
  • A: Consult your resulting mpeg with VLC: "yeepee kay-ay, it has sound!"
